Man dies during scuffle: Five police officers placed on administrative leave
In another incident of crime, five police officers were placed on paid administrative leave after the man they were trying to arrest in southeast Washington state died. As per reports by media outlets, Jose Mercado (48) became unresponsive after a struggle with Richland police officers late Sunday night.
Mercado, a resident of Arlington, Texas, was pronounced dead at a hospital on Monday.
Officer was responding to a domestic violence call when Mercado in the street confronted them, said police. The officers warned him and asked him to pay heed to their commands. Despite being warned, Mercado approached them with closed fists. An officer then tried using a stun gun on him.
The stun gun was “ineffective,” police said. While additional police officers were called as Mercado still attacked officers. It was during this scuffle that he became unresponsive. A multi-agency unit is investigating the death. The officers have been placed on paid administrative leave which is said to be a standard policy for police.
